The competition proposal for the complex revitalization of the historical center of Žilina includes an overall concept for the development of public spaces, a detailed design of the main Mariánské Square and adjacent streets, and the regulation of new buildings in the existing urban structure of the city.

The proposal approaches the area with respect, sensitively linking to the historical development of the city and its public spaces, and gently adding a new, contemporary layer. The design emphasizes the architectural qualities of Žilina and creates a clear hierarchy of public spaces.

The heart of the city is Mariánské Square, from whose corners the main streets lead to the first ring road. On this ring road, piazzettas are situated, forming gateways into the city. These main public spaces are complemented by a ring following the path of the fortifications on Horní and Dolní val streets and other narrow alleys typical of the cores of Central European cities.

A significant benefit for the city and its inhabitants is the generously designed blue-green infrastructure, which aligns with global trends contributing to climate improvement in cities. This infrastructure is elegantly hidden under a stone-paved carpet and does not disrupt the public space.
