The center of Velké Meziříčí
The fundamental concept of the design is to support the positive aspects of the current state of the square, to reveal its historical traces, and to complement them with elements of contemporary urbanism. The project, covering a total area of 20,806 m², preserves the connection of the center to the surrounding urban fabric, while placing the main emphasis on the treatment of greenery, the new organization of traffic, and high-quality surface solutions.
The greenery strategy builds on the preservation and supplementation of the linden grove at the center of the square as well as the existing tree avenues. New trees will be added primarily in the wider streets with southern exposure in order to improve the microclimate. Solitary trees will reinforce the major compositional axes near the church and create a pleasant atmosphere in the resting areas.
The traffic solution introduces a pedestrian zone on the square and in the adjacent sections of Kostelní and Komenského streets. By implementing clear one-way and two-way traffic "pockets", retention parking lots on the peripheral streets, and preserving 50 service spaces directly on the square, transit traffic through the center will be eliminated without limiting the daily capacity for visitors or nighttime parking for residents.
The new paving follows the functional division of the space and incorporates the recycling of the original granite setts. The representative areas in front of the town hall and the church are covered with large-format stone paving in a grey melange, which transitions into a resting area beneath the trees featuring small cobblestones and gravel surfacing. Vehicular traffic areas are paved with granite setts, while the sidewalks use cut mosaic paving.
An important part of the revitalization is the sustainable blue-green infrastructure for efficient stormwater management. The design combines retention trenches, infiltration elements, and a storage tank for capturing rainwater from the roofs of adjacent buildings, which is subsequently used for the irrigation of urban greenery. The amenity quality and microclimate on hot days are supported directly on the square by water features in the form of misting nozzles, new drinking fountains, and the restoration of the historic well.
